Did you know that the standard map of the Earth is wrong and land masses are distorted? Well, now you do!

The most common map of the world, and the one most people are familiar with, is known as the The Mercator projection (above). It was designed in 1596 to help sailors navigate the seas and, although the shape of each country is correct, the size of each country is out of proportion.  As an example it appears that Greenland is of comparable size to Africa but in reality Africa is 14x bigger!

Our fascination with maps started at an early age when we would spend hours looking at the Earth, trying to memorize each country's capital city and imagining what life must be like in those far off lands. 

A map can be a very personal thing which allows the viewer to dream of future destinations, reminisce about special places from the past or help them find where they are at the present.
